The last time a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress banned civilian sales of some types of military-style assault weapons, it took American voters barely seven weeks to hand Republicans control of Capitol Hill for the first time in 40 years.

One of the prominent casualties of that backlash was the sponsor in the House - Rep. Jack Brooks, D-Texas, who lost his seat in Congress in 1994 after 42 years of service.

As I've mentioned, if the 800 pound gorilla is the NRA, his 600 pound mate must be the 1994 election. Politicians have a long memory when it comes to their public trough survival. But, as that year fades away into history, others will test us.

You won't catch me throwing my feet up on the coffee table. They will keep nicking at our hamstring tendons, hoping for a death by a thousand cuts. Vigilance is the watchword.
