Thread: If you haven't read these two books...

American Sniper by Chris Kyle. I heard that some lamebrain reporter gave him a hard time during an interview, didn't see/hear it but just as well as it would have yanked me off BIGTIME if I had. All these antis are anti until they're in trouble. The only reason these so-called reporters can conduct so-called interviews (cushy job, no?) is because men like Chris and Marcus Luttrell do what they do and do it very well.

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell This one has been around for a bit (pub 2005?) but is an excellent read. I wonder if the aforementioned lamebrain reporter could withstand all he has? Lemme think about it, NO!!!

Another excellent book along this same line is "Shooter" (c-2005) by Gunnery Sgt Jack Coughlin, the Marine Corps top sniper at the time. There was the usual interesting narrative about his personal life and the equipment he used, but the real engaging subject was the complete retooling of the 'Corps use of snipers.

Going back to World War I, snipers were used as specialists. If an infantry unit was faced with an enemy sniper, you called up your sniper to deal with it. It was like calling up a mechanic to fix a Jeep.

Even as late as 'Nam this was the dogma, although stories abound about the recce exploits of the great Carlos Hathcock.

But Coughlin, along with his direct superior Capt Casey Kuhlman, single handedly was able to sell their program to the 'Corps top brass. Their style was to bring sniper to the front and use them activity in direct support of assault forces, especially combat in built up areas in Kuwait and Iraq.

Snipers can be very terrifying even to seasoned infantry. A bullet comes flying out of the dark from a thousand meters away and takes the head off your friend standing only a foot away can be.....er.... unnerving. Add the fact that the enemy is a grade school graduate irregular, and the sniper becomes an outstanding force-multiplier.

    Anyway, and excellent read.

Yes, I'd read Lone Survivor, the eyewitness account of Operation Redwing and the lost heroes of SEAL Team 10.

Please allow a personal moment. I was at a local gun show 3 weeks ago. I was taking a break outside as a guy came walking towards the door and on this shoulder was a Garand M-4 (D) sniper rifle. He had a little sign indicating it was for sale. I hadn't seen one of these rifles since Sniper School at Camp Mathews in 1961. I stopped him and we talked for awhile. His uncle had died and although he'd been in the Marines, he'd never been a sniper and had picked up the rifle many years later at some unknown place.

I hefted the rifle with fond memories. I had graduated from Sniper School but had never been utilized as one. 'Nam was ramping up, and the 'Corp was desperate for experienced infantry NCO's. I didn't even ask the guy how much he wanted for it, I really didn't feel comfortable owning that type of tool and not having a direct personal connection to it's use.

With the calibers and optics available today for the M4 Platform every squad should have a designated long-range marksman.
