Good article and right on point. A few years ago we had a neighbor go off his meds and start shooting at his wife. While I did recognized the sounds as gun fire I could not tell direction or even general location in the neighborhood. Found out a few minutes later it was directly across the street!!

Good article. The article however lacks significant detail on decibel levels and also the fact that the questions of how the gunshot sounded was from children or adults that had never heard a gunshot before. Gunshot "sounds are "changed" by walls, floors, cubicle tiles, and I could go on forever. The one issue that I want to comment on is this one "– I assume that most of the folks reading this page are shooters and have at least heard the sound of gunfire at some point in their lives. If you haven’t ever heard the sounds of gunshots, please have a friend take you shooting or visit a shooting range just to hear the sounds. Different firearms make different sounds. A .22 rifle does not make the same sound as a 9mm handgun or a 12 gauge shotgun. Try to hear several different types of guns. You don’t have to learn to identify the caliber, only recognize that shots are being fired". Gunshots fired in a "shooting" situation are very different than hearing gun shots from a range. If you really want to learn what gunshots sound like, go to a range, step back 20 feet and take your ear protection off....you will then start to understand.
