First, the basics...

What is a social group?
A social group is a group of people usually with a particular interest or something else in common. It provides a way of communicating between members as well as sharing photos or other images.
You can get to the list through 'Group Memberships' section on your public profile (?).
The Social Groups list page displays all groups that have been created. You can list the groups by the number of members, messages or pictures, the group name, when the group was created or by the date of the most recent message posted. You can use the controls provided to search for a group.
How do I join a group?
To join a group, click the group title then click 'Join Group'. When you have joined a group, its name will be shown in your public profile. You must be a logged-in, registered member to join groups.
Can I create my own social group?
As a registered member, you can create your own social group. Go to the groups page and click 'Create A New Group'. Complete the title and description for your group then select the type. There are three types of groups:

  • Public - open to everyone. There is no restriction on who can join or who can post messages to it
  • Invite Only - require an invitation to be sent to join them. Invitations can only be sent by the group creator or forum moderators and administrators. Invitations are sent by clicking 'Pending & Invited Members' at the bottom of the page for that individual group
  • Moderated - open to everyone to join but messages need to be moderated before they will appear. They are moderated by the group creator and the site moderators and administrators

Now, You can find the social group link in the navbar under "Community". I've also added additional links to show messages of the groups that you are a member of. In the Red & Black style, these messages are linked in the navbar as S/G Messages.

Why have a social group?
Let's say you and a few friends want your own forum to chat and discuss issues. Simply click the social group link and create a new group. First select a catagory, General, political, etc... Then give it a title, add a description if you'd like. Choose whether it is a private invitation only forum or a public forum anyone can join. You can also make it a moderated forum where you (as the creator) must approve all messages before allowing them to be posted. You can upload a photo to be your groups logo as well, this picture will be re-sized to 200x200px.

Let's say you love XD pistols and want to start an XD pistol group with other members that share your fondness.

Let's say you love to hunt. You could start a hunters group, post your trophy pictures, brag about amazing shots, and discuss tips and strategies. You could share wild game recipes, and lie about how good you can cook!

Let's say you have fellow members from your state and you want to start a Texas group to discuss on going issues for CCW in your state. Set it up! When new members join and you see they are from Texas too, you can invite them to join your group.

The possibilities are endless.

I suspect Zen will start a bacon lovers group.

Point being, this expands your networking with friends and members with a topic specific environment that you can share or keep private. I must note that myself & the moderators can still access a private group that is off limits to other members. Forum rules still apply but will be more lenient in a private group setting.

If you have any questions about social groups, just post them below.
